Alice Springs Beanie Festival
29th June to 2nd July 2018
The Alice Springs Beanie Festival is a must do for any beanie/hat lover. This weekend of entertainment, workshops, food stalls and crafts will have more than 4000 beanies on display.
This annual event is held at the Araluen Art Centre and attracts thousands of visitors from all around the world. The Festival is a community- based event that began in 1997 with a ‘beanie party’, organised by Adi Dunlop. Originally the festival was run by a group of friends who volunteered to teach Aboriginal women in remote communities the art of knitting and crocheting. The beanies created were sold in town and the profits went back to the community.
These days the highly-anticipated festival has progressed into a fun event where Aboriginal and non-aboriginal artists share their culture and exhibit together.
